After Meeting President and Minister:Statement from the Secretariat of Christian Schools in Israel

The Negotiations Committee of Christian Schools, led by Bishop Giacinto-Boulos Marcuzzo, met on Monday the 24th of August in the President’s house with President Reuven Rivlen, Minister of Education Naftali Bennet, his general director Mikhal Cohen and a delegation from the Ministry of Education in order to discuss the Christian school crisis.

President Rivlen opened the meeting with words of praise regarding the role of the Christian schools and their educational value over hundreds of years. He emphasized the importance of their continuity in providing distinctive education. Minister of Education Bennet followed him with similar words emphasizing the role of the Christian schools and confirming that he supports their right of existence and the necessity of supporting them in as legitimate means as possible. The minister committed to find a balanced formula to solve the budget crisis within Christian schools. A mechanism was set in place for continued communication in order to reach an agreement on the details resulting from the mentioned balanced formula and requires the Secretariat of schools to prepare legal and accounting reports in order to formulate a solution to the current crisis.

The Secretariat sees this meeting as a positive step that requires follow up with negotiations of working teams from the ministry in order to translate the discussion into actual work on the ground.

In light of this, it has not yet been decided if the school year is going to be open as scheduled and the schools are to await further notice.

Issued by the General Secretariat of the Christian Schools on the 24th of August 2015
