Ramez Jaraisy re-elected as mayor of Nazareth
In a very close tie, Ramiz Jaraisy was re-elected as mayor of Nazareth. Jaraisy won 49.22% of the votes, while Ahmad Zuabi won 45.24% . On the other hand, the results for the City council reflected an interesting tie between Jaraisy's party (Al-Jabha), and Zuabi's party (Al-Muwahady): Each party received 8 seats. The last seat in the 17 members City council was given to Basheer Abdul Razik, head of "People of Nazareth Together" list.

These results are only slightly different from the tie between Nazareth's main two parties in the last term. The Nazareth Front (Al-Jabha) has ruled the town for more than 28 years. It is a secular movement supported by both Christian and Moslem Communities of Nazareth, and is headed by Ramez Jaraisy, a Christian Engineer. It is linked to "The Popular Front for Peace and Equality" (Hadash) that the communist party is the main factor in. Jaraisy replaced the popular and charismatic mayor, the late Tawfeek Zayaad, a Moslem, who lead Nazareth with the same party for 20 years until he died in 1995.

From the other side, The United List (Al-Muwahady) is solely Moslem and is dominated by the Fundamentalist Islamic Movement in Israel. Five years ago, the elections were very tense, since the main issue was the building of Shehab El-Din Mosque near the Basilica of Annunciation. Christians in town and around the world opposed it, while many Moslems supported it. It resulted in an unusual tie in the elections where Jaraisy was elected mayor with his party winning 9 seats while the United List had the majority in the city council with 10 seats (Number of total seats in cities the size of Nazareth was reduced by the goverment from 19 in 1999 to 17 in 2003). This was a beginning of a wide coalition between two parties that failed and caused the city to suffer from a crippled municipality for a long time.

Besides the fact that it is important as one of the most holy sites for Christians, Nazareth is also the main Arab town in Israel, with around 70,000 residents. It is also home to the biggest population of Christian Arabs in Israel and Palestine together, with around 28,000 Christians living in Nazareth, together with around 42,000 Moslems.

The Shehab El-Din issue was not central in the agenda of both parties this year, but it seems that the residents of Nazareth still voted in a very close pattern to the way they voted 4 years ago. The disputed land was evacuated by the government few months ago, after pressure from the Pope and other Western Countries.

The only difference this time is that mayor Jaraisy has several options: he can choose one of three coalitions: One with "People Of Nazareth Together" list, with the "United List", or a coalition of all parties. "People of Nazareth together" list, that will hold one seat out of 17 is the key in establishing the new council. It is linked to Balad, an Arab-Nationalist secular party and therefore is closer ideologically to Jaraisy's party than to the Islamic movement.
